couldn't see some of the database in the object explorer window of Management Studio

hey guys,
I have one question. But it is not related with the Reporting Service. I got my computer set up with SQL Server 2005 version yesterday. When I connect to the database engine, I can see only system databases(master,model,msdb and tempdb) under the system database folder. I couldn't see other databases(like pubs,northwind) in the object explorer window of Management Studio. Do you have any idea how to solve this difficulty?

Thanks.

Amde

Hi,

no problem there. These databases aren′t installed by default. There are scripts to build up the database from scratch:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=06616212-0356-46A0-8DA2-EEBC53A68034&displaylang=en

Or you use the Adventureworks sample database:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e719ecf7-9f46-4312-af89-6ad8702e4e6e&DisplayLang=en

Pubs and northwind are no longer installed by default.|||

How about the other databases like Adventurework db? If you have some idea how to configure the database engine, please let me know.

I appreciate your response.

Adventureworks is not installed by default either. Your questions are more appropriately suited for the "SQL Server Tools General" forum. http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=84&SiteID=1.

An easy test is to simply create a new database, refresh the object explorer, and you should see it there.

I am not certain what the best way to install the sample databases is post-installation. You should ask that question either in the tools forum or the setup forum (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=95&SiteID=1).

Thank you for your advise. I will post this question on the appropriate form discussion board.

Hi, Amde --

This content will be available in the next version of BOL --

Before you can use SQL Server 2005 samples, you must install them. Installing the samples is a two-step process. Samples are not installed by default and SQL Server Setup does not run the sample installation program for you. First, when running setup, on the Features Component page, select Samples. This will copy the samples installation program to your computer during setup. Second, to run the samples installation program, point to the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Documentation and Samples, point to Samples, and click Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Samples. To get the most recent samples, uninstall your current samples, and download and install the latest SQL Server 2005 samples from the Microsoft download Web site. To uninstall the current version of samples, point to the Start menu, point to Control Panel, and click Add or Remove Programs. Click Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Samples, and then click Remove. To find the most current samples, search http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ for “SQL Server 2005 Samples and Sample Databases”. Choose the edition that matches your Reporting Services installation.

couldn't rename or delete maintenance plan in Management Studio

Hi,
I tried to rename and delete one old maintenance plan which is created by
other DBA and before the machine was renamed. But, I kept getting the
following error. I can rename and delete the maintenance plan I created.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When
connecting to SQL server 2005, this failure may be cuased by the fact that
under the default settinfs SQL server does not allow remote connections
(provider: Named Pipes providers, error: 40 - could not open a connection to
SQL server) (Microsoft SQL server, Error: 53)
Shared Memory, TCP and Named Piples are all enabled.
Please advise.
Best Regards,
Lynn
I think the problem is that the maintenance plan use the Local Server
Connection which still point to the old machine name. (I couldn't move this
connection or modify the server name for this connection at all). I add
another connection, but I still couldn't delete this maintenance plan.
Please advise.
Best Regards,
Lynn

Could not open a connection to SQL server error on Vista

Hey,

After install Visual Studio 2005 (with SQL sever express) on recent Vista build, trying to connect to a local sse database file from Data Source Window (accessible from Data/Show data source window) gives this error:

Microsoft Visual Studio

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

OK

No issues if we install Visual Studio 2005 on WinXP or W2k3.

Is there any configuration we need to set on vista to allow sql connection?

Thanks,

Mei

Not having tried Vista I don't know if there are special issues there, but by default SQL Server instances are installed with the external interfaces disabled. Use SQL Server Configuration Manager to enable the protocols (if they are not enabled already). This can also be done with the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool.

If this does not help, see my blog (www.betav.com\blog\billva)

|||

You will have to enable SQLBrowser service.

I have the same problem. If you have found a solution to the problem, then let me know.

Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SqlServerCe'...

I am trying to use SQL Mobile 2005 with Visual Studio 2005. I have a simple sql mobile db i created and am trying to test connectivity to the DB in a simple app. I added the reference to the SqlServerCE and the verison # that is shown in properties is 3.0.3600.0, but when i look at the physical DLL in explorer (found at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SmartDevices\SDK\SQL Server\Mobile\v3.0) the version # is 3.0.5206.0, so when i compile and run the test, I get :
System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SqlServerCe, Version=9.0.242.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) > System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SqlServerCe, Version=3.0.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=3be235df1c8d2ad3, Retargetable=Yes' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040).

I have uninstalled visual studio and reinstalled thinking I had a driver issue because I had beta products installed, but I get the same result. I am at a loss of what to do about this.
Hi Mike,

Which project you are working on?
PPC2003/PPC2005/SPH2005/WCE42/WCE50/WIN32

Also is it the device or emulator?

Can you try installing VS 2005 on a very clean machine (no uninstalls and installs) and see if it repros. Basically we want to figure out whether it is a setup issue or a functional issue.

Thanks,
Laxmi NRO, MSFT, SQL Mobile, Microsoft Coporation|||I seemed to have narrowed down the issue. I am using PPC 2005 btw.
The above error occurs if I am using the built in Unit Testing in Team Edition. If i strip out that stuff and just have a simple connection object (outside a test harness) it works fine. Has anyone been able to do TDD using win mobile and sql mobile 2005?|||

UT is not supported for devices, so the answer is no.

well that is garbage. anyway, for this example i wasn't testing anything using mobile, just a simple sql mobile connection.|||

Have you installed the Workstation Components in addition to the Integration Services on this machine?

Thanks.

Hi Bob

I installed the client programs on the Visual Studio Foundation Server DVDs and the Visual Studio Team Services programs. When I start up VS it says that I have SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS installed.

Thanks

Larry Geiger

|||It is just that these projects are registered in VS, but to actually use them you would need to install appropriate pieces of the SQL Server product.

Could not find server

I have linked a server withinh the "SQL Server Management Studio
Express"
I also created a database where I created a view using the openquiery
statement.
The view runs perfectly within the "SQL Server Management Studio
Express"
I created a new project with "Microsoft Visual Studio 2005"
I created a shared data source to the database where I created the
views.
The data source is OK because I can see the cretaed views on the Query
Builder.
Once I created the query on the Query Builder and I try to run it, the
following message appears:
"SQL Execution Error
Error Source: .NetSqlClient Data Provider
Error Message: Could not find server 'xxx' in sysservers. Execute
sp_addlinkedserver to add the server to sysservers.
Could not use view or function 'xxx' because of binding errors"
I have looked for server 'xxx' in sysservers and it is there, so I do
not understand where the error originates.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Mexico CityAbraham,
Is the working connection local and the non-working connection remote?
If so, open SQL Server Configuration Manager and adjust connection
protocols for SQL Express.

could not find row in sysindexes for database

I am trying to attach a database that was created on another server. I believe the database was created using SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005. Now, I have successfully attached the database in my development environment, which is using SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005.

However, when I tried to attach the database onto our production server, which is SQL Server 2000 I received the error:

Error 602:
Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 18, object ID 1, index ID 1. Run DBCC CheckTable on sysindexes.

In my development environment, I ran DBCC CheckDB on the source database and no errors are returned.

I aslo checked the compatibility level under the database properties and it shows: Sql Server 2000 (80)

So, this should not be a version incompatibility issue. What is causing the attach to fail on SQL Server 2000?

Thanks for any help.

What I know is:

If you have an .mdf file in SQL Server 2000, then you attached it to SQL Server 2005 ... no way you can use it (the .mdf file) again with SQL Server 2000.

What I think about is SQL Serve 2006 .mdf files can not be used with SQL Server 2000!!

Try Backup/Restore option or Copy Database Wizard.

Good luck.

|||

Are you trying to attach a SQL 2005 database to a SQL 2000 server? If so, that's the issue. Obviously you can upgrade (2000 --> 2005), but you can't downgrade.

Could not create an user to SQL Server 2005

Hi,

I am trying to add "Remote Desktop Users" as a login group to SQL Server 2005 (i.e. so they can log into management studio). I get a "Not Found Error" (see below). But it is of course found, because I selected it :-) What is going on here? I see the "Administrators" group and various SQL Server groupls added automatically there, so there must be a way, right?

I know I can add each user in the group individually, but that seems overkill when I can just use the group in which they are contained.

Here is the error I get:

Could not bind a SQL Server 2005 Web Service to DataGridView when creating Web Service Client in

Hello,

I would like to develop a minimal Web Service Client in Visual Studio (C#) which call a Web Service created in SQL Server 2005. I have definied a simple stored procedure and a HTTP endpoint which are both working.

In Visual Studio 2005 Pro I proceed following steps:

    New application (C#) Add web reference to the project (http://localhost:8084/Produktdaten?wsdl) Add DataGridView to the form1 in the designer window Configure DataGridView Data Source by selecting "other data sources" - "project data sources" - "localhost" and "produktdaten". In the Form1 (Designer View) the columns "EnableDecompress" ... appears. I could not select my expected web method "GetProduct" definied in the stored procedure.

Afterwards I tried to solve the problem manually with the following code (form1.cs). I could compile this windows application succesfully. When I started the corresponding.exe file I got an error. In the debugging mode problems were reported with the line "dataGridView1.DataMember = "Product";". In the SQL Server database (AdventureWorks) the product table belongs to the schema production. Also with production.product the code listed below did not work.

Could you please help to get this simple web service client running.

Best regards,
Wolfgang

Wolfgang,

In general, you can not directly assign the result from the SQL Server 2005 Native Web Services web method as the data source to a dataGridView.
BTW, you do not need to configure the DataGridView data source at design time.

If the stored procedure was mapped to the endpoint WITHOUT the keyword "FORMAT = ROWSETS_ONLY", then the result of the stored procedure is an array of objects. The array can contain SqlMessages, DataSet, RowCount, etc. I believe the DataGridView.DataSource requires a DataTable, but I can't be sure. What has worked for me, as a quick sample code, is:
object[] resp = proxy.method(myParam);
foreach (object o in resp)
{
if (o.GetType().ToString().Equals("System.Data.DataSet"))
{
this.dataGridView1.DataSource = ((DataSet)o).Tables[0];
}
}

If the stored procedure was mapped to the endpoint WITH the keyword "FORMAT = ROWSETS_ONLY", then the result of the stored procedure is directly a DataSet. The DataSet object can contain multiple DataTables (depending on how many SELECT statements are in the stored procedure). You can then assign the DataTable as the data source of the DataGridView. So, something like:
DataSet ds = proxy.method(myParam);
this.dataGridView1.DataSource = ds.Tables[0];

Jimmy,

sorry for my late response (vacation).

The provided solution works fine. Also the explanation of the "FORMAT" keyword was very helpful.

Thank you very much.
